Our client needed an experienced hands-on interim to create a Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) that was enterprise class in nature, moved the business from a product purchaser to a service integrator and enabled an end-to-end customer journey. The organisation was changing gear on the adoption of the cloud, taking it from a pioneering style position to an enterprise level capability and needed an expert to accelerate the pace of change in this complex £24m programme.

With experience in structuring and delivering complex and large-scale transformation programmes, this interim reported to the board and led a 150-strong team to cover Software as a Service implementations and build two new platforms, putting in security and a controls framework that provided the confidence in consuming public cloud. Vested domain leaders from all parts of the organisation formed the management team and a permanent capability was built into the programme for sustainability once the CCoE was operational. Many vendors were replaced with permanent resources and a co-lead shadowed the interim to build up the skills and experience needed to run the Centre of Excellence at the end of the 14-month programme.

Building out three different products the organisation could operate and migrated the initial applications onto the cloud. The products included an operating model for SaaS management and two platforms with full CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) pipelines: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure with added levels of security and control. A significant cultural shift in IT has enabled further innovations and seen substantial benefits, accelerating past many of its competitors. The operating model and structure of the CCoE meant that no part of the society was left behind in this end-to-end transformation; one of technology, people, process, security and controls. The whole society was vested in its success.
